The history of Wuhan can date back 3,500 years ago. In the period of the Warring States (770 B.C. - 221 B.C.), this area was the land of the State of Chu and the brilliant Chu culture can be found everywhere in Wuhan today. In the Han Dynasty, Hanyang had been a fairly busy port. In the 3rd century AD, walls were built to protect Hanyang and Wuchang cities, which marked the establishment of Wuhan City. In the Qing Dynasty, Hankou, one of the three small cities in Wuhan was reputed to be "one of the four famous trading towns" in China. In the late 1800"s, railroads were extended on a north-south axis through Wuhan city, which then became an important transshipment point between rail and river traffic. Wuhan is also the birthplace of the Chinese democratic revolution. In 1911, the Xinhai Revolution rose up in Wuchang and the last feudalistic dynasty- the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) was overthrown.

Known as the "Homeland of White Clouds and Yellow Crane" in the history of China, Wuhan has many famous historical remains and cultural relics. One of the highlights is the Yellow Crane Tower which is reputed as one of the top five ancient towers in China. Originally built in 223 AD during the Three Kingdoms Period, the Yellow Crane Tower suffered several damages in the history. The present one was reconstructed in 1981 on the original site by imitation of ancient architecture style. Standing on the top of the tower, you can get a grand view of Yangtze River. Through the centuries the Yellow Crane Tower has inspired many poets, among whom Cui Hao from the Tang Dynasty (618-907AD) wrote the most famous poem describing this tower. ч ч Wuhan is also a city with magnificent natural sceneries.
