The province of Central Anatolia is home to the city of Konya, which is where tourists will go to see the Mevlana Museum. This museum spotlights the life and career of the popular mystic, Rumi or, as he is correctly known, Mawlana Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Balkhi-Rumi, and is located right next door to his tomb. The museum"s highlights include 13th century works of art, manuscripts and musical instruments as well as Rumi"s personal effects.The Ince Minaret Medrese is another well known site in Konya, and, although this minaret was originally used as a school, it is today a museum that exhibits Seljuk and Ottoman artifacts. The minaret was built in the 13th century on instructions from Vizier SÓ¢hib Ata Fahreddin Ali and, after years of neglect, underwent a thorough renovation during 1956. With its ornamented exterior, the minaret is a wonderful example of Ottoman architecture.
Probably the most famous historical site in Konya is the AlÓ¢eddin Mosque, which dates back to the middle of the 12th century and which took 100 years to build. One of the more fascinating holidays Turkey offers will include exploring this mosque, which is the final resting place for at least eight of the Seljuk sultans of Rum. There are actually two mausoleums on the mosque"s premises, but history is silent on who lies buried in the second tomb.
